Ping Pong Toss

Ten balls a basket. How many cups can you sink?

Gameplay: a ping pong stall made of classroom desks pushed together, with yellow cups, red cups, blue cups on a spinner and black cups on a little train lined up from front to back. A ball trailing a dotted path drops in from the upper left toward the cups, and the blackboard behind reads "ピンポン玉入れ" (ping pong toss in Japanese), with prizes hanging in a row from the Everyone Wins candy up to a 30-pt electric fan
  1. Hold a ball
    and flick up
  2. Flick faster
    go farther
  3. Sink it in
    a cup

Press and hold the ball at the bottom of the screen, flick upward and let go to throw it.
On desktop, use your mouse: click and hold, drag up, then let go.

How to play

You get 10 ping pong balls per basket. Hold the ball at the bottom of the screen, flick up and let go, and off it flies. The faster you flick, the farther it goes. Flick at an angle and it heads left or right. Swipe sideways just before you let go and the ball spins, curving that way in midair.

Ping pong balls bounce. The table, cup rims, the cup next door and other balls on the table all send it hopping around. Whichever cup it finally settles in, floating on the water, is the one that counts. The game slows down a little as the ball drops toward a cup, so you can see whether it goes in.

Balls that miss stay on the table. If a later throw knocks one into a cup, it counts for you. There's no time limit, so take your time aiming.

Scoring

  • Green cup × 11Front1 pt
  • Yellow cup × 11Middle2 pts
  • Red cup × 9Back3 pts
  • Spinner cup × 6Never stops5 pts
  • Train cup × 2Back and forth10 pts

Each cup only counts once. A second ball in the same cup scores nothing, and it often just bounces off the one already in there.

A bounce shot still counts. A ball that hits the table before going in scores the same as a clean one, no more, no less.

The fan

As soon as your total hits 5 pts, the stall owner wheels in an electric fan. The camera glances to the left, and you can throw again once the fan is in place and running. If you only reach 5 pts on your 10th ball, the fan never shows up.

Once the fan is on, every cup you sink is worth 1 extra pt. A ping pong ball weighs just 2.7 g, so the wind really does push it around: aim dead center and it drifts almost a full cup even at the green cups, and more the farther back you go. The black cups on the train are the toughest.

The fan stands at the front left of the stall and blows to the right, straight across the first stretch of your throw, swinging from side to side as it goes. The white wind lines show where the air is blowing, and the flatter the red yarn on the front of the left side panel flies, the stronger the wind. When the fan turns toward you, the yarn drops and the wind is at its weakest.

Prize wall

Seven tiers of prizes hang on the chalkboard. Whatever tier your total reaches, that's your prize, and even 0 pts gets you a bag of candy. The prizes are just for fun and aren't saved.
